World Snake Day

World snake day - celebrate our slithering friends

World Snake Day takes place every July 16th and it's a terrific opportunity to stop and consider all things snake. Did you know that we have 6 different kinds of snakes that live here in Alberta? and that they are all very different than each other? Some species are venomous, while others use constriction to immobilize their prey. Certain snakes are rarely seen because they spend most of their time underground, but others are comfortable living VERY close to humans.

Our native snakes are: The prairie rattlesnake, Western hog-nosed snake, Red-sided garter snake, Terrestrial garter snake, Plains garter snake and the Bullsnake.

While snakes can make some people uncomfortable, it is important to remember that they are part of a diverse ecosystem, help keep rodent populations under control and mostly keep to themselves.

When hiking or camping in the wilderness, remember not to put your hands or feet into any holes where a snake might be resting and be threatened by your intrusion.

Happy World Snake Day!
